In 1953, the first registered Angus came to Fernvale. For 50 plus years, we have raised replacement females, bulls and show cattle.

Being born and raised on Fernvale Farm, I have been involved in the raising of Angus cattle all my life.

I have been involved in producer groups and service organizations from County 4-H to my recent office as President Elect of the Wisconsin Beef Council. Recently, I served 2 years as President of the Wisconsin Cattle Association.

Serving on these organizations has allowed me to meet several people and helped develop programs that market and educate producers to better their operations.

I must have reached that age. In the last few years I have been honored as "Cattleman of the Year" by the WCA, recipient of the Paul May Award (named after my father) from the World Beef Expo and Beef Producer of the Year by the Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Association. These awards mean a lot to me, but the success of the herd and our customer's success is really what we strive for.

We are very focused on customer needs and the economics of the cow herd.

Through the early years of Fernvale we showed and sold several top Steers, including 3 steers in the 80’s that were either Grand or Reserve Grand at NJAS.

In the 50 years, we have seen several things that we can use in our quest for better genetics. In 1963, we had the Grand Champion Carcass steer at the International in Chicago. The steer weighted 954 pounds and market ready. In 2006, we raised a calf that weighted 985 pounds at weaning.

Pounds of calves sold in the fall is a combination of maximizing birth weight and growth from cows that milk and care for their calves. Our customers expect these traits and receive more by incorporating carcass traits and cattle that look good in the front pasture.

We will show you cow families that continue to do well for both ourselves and our customers.
We will continue to develop these families and cattle that work.
